HISTORY Eleven Asian-American women founded Kappa Zeta Phi, Gamma Chapter, at the University of California, San Diego on April 25, 1994. The eleven women first met in October of 1993 with the common goal of establishing a strong sisterhood focusing on the Asian-American culture and the role of women within it. They sought to build a sisterhood around friendship, support, love, respect, and unity to address these serious issues and to make that struggle a success. On March 4, 1995, the Kappa Zeta Phi, Alpha Chapter at California State University at Los Angeles extended a Charter to the eleven women. In early September of 1994, Kappa Zeta Phi, Alpha Chapter and Kappa Zeta Phi, Beta Chapter at the University of California, Irvine began the pledgeship of the new colony. Through an emotional, difficult, and worthwhile pledge period, Kappa Zeta Phi, Gamma Chapter was established with much support, love, guidance, respect, and friendship of Alpha and Beta Chapters. With the prime focus of tradition, respect, and most importantly, sisterhood, Kappa Zeta Phi, Gamma Chapter exists as an organization dedicated to enhancing UCSD women, regardless of ethnicity, in areas of Asian-American culture, academics, social life, community service, and personal achievement. COMMUNITY SERVICE Kappa Zeta Phi is a sorority that prioritizes community service above most activities. Some of the services we have participated in include trick-or-treating for canned goods, attending the annual Relay for Life, and various walks that help raise awareness on particular issues such as the Multiple Sclerosis Walk. Because we highly value giving back to our community, we encourage the incoming class to set up new community service projects as a part of the pledging curriculum. Some of these projects included cleaning up graffiti, assisting at homeless shelters, and helping with holiday meals at the local food banks. SOCIAL It is important to us to keep good relations with other organizations. During the course of the year, we interact with various organizations in the San Diego, Irvine, and Los Angeles area through exchange events. These exchanges include activities such as going out to dinners, barbeques, and ice cream socials. As an incoming member, “big bros” from various fraternities will be assigned to guide and better acquaint you to their organization. As a sorority, we try to attend every event that helps show our support to other organizations. SISTERHOOD Kappa Zeta Phi emphasizes sisterhood above all. As members of the sorority, the sisters of Kappa Zeta Phi will create bonds that will last a lifetime. In order to do so, we coordinate special events dedicated to promote sisterhood which helps strengthen our sorority. These events will allow sisters to get to know each other on a personal level. Some of the sisterhood events include pot luck dinners, ice skating, movie nights, and going to Knott's Scary Farm. One of our biggest events is the annual summer retreat which is held in Big Bear. |
